Not all kava is the same. Across the Pacific Islands, there are dozens of distinct kava cultivars — each shaped by centuries of traditional cultivation and each with its own unique character. Understanding the differences between cultivars is key to finding the kava experience that suits you best. New to kava? Start with our complete beginner's guide.
What Makes a Cultivar Noble?
Kava varieties are broadly categorised as "noble" or "non-noble" (tudei). Noble cultivars have been selected by Pacific Island farmers over centuries for their balanced kavalactone profiles, pleasant effects, and safe track record of daily consumption. The Codex Alimentarius recommends only noble varieties for human use.
Non-noble (tudei) varieties contain higher levels of flavokavains, which are linked to nausea and prolonged negative effects. House of Kava exclusively sources noble cultivars — every batch is lab-tested and fully traceable.
Understanding Chemotypes
Every kava cultivar has a chemotype — a numerical sequence (e.g. 4-2-6) that describes which of the six kavalactones are most dominant. The chemotype determines the cultivar's character:
- Cultivars led by kavain (4) tend to be clear-headed and uplifting — common in Fijian varieties.
- Cultivars led by dihydrokavain (2) lean towards deeper relaxation and body effects — typical of many Vanuatu varieties.
- The full sequence shapes the overall experience — from onset speed to duration to the balance of head and body effects.
"The chemotype is like a fingerprint — it tells you exactly what kind of experience to expect from each cultivar."
